William Wilson is a NASCAR Champion and a successful clothier to the stars. He founded the William Wilson foundation in honor of his mother, Della Lamb—a domestic abuse survivor.
The William Wilson Foundation is dedicated to helping those in the fight against domestic violence. Wilson was a child when he witnessed the violent physical and mental abuse of his mother, Ms. Della Lamb. As a child, Wilson vowed to grow up and become a successful man so that his mother could be proud of him, and he wanted her suffering to not be in vain. He wanted her to be proud of the man she had done her best to raise.
Wilson often shares that he knew that when it came to escaping domestic violence, his mother was the “exception not the norm.”
According to a study published by the United Nations, “thirty-five percent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published that every year, over 10 million women and men are victims of intimate partner violence.
Domestic violence is also affecting young people at an alarming rate. Just in 2016, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (“Loveisrespect”) for teens and young adults received over 323,669 calls, texts and chats, proving that domestic violence is not only experienced by adults, but is unfortunately seen with teens and young adults alike.
To do his part to help eradicate domestic violence, every year, William Wilson organizes the “William Wilson Golf Classic” to raise money for the foundation, and to help fund the scholarships the foundation awards to children from domestically violent families. Wilson’s friends and athlete, entertainer and professional clients, all come out to support Wilson, raise money for the charity and have some fun, all while giving back to the community and helping others.
